Links bound outward FROM your site to other websites do not count in this tally. Ask your vendors and other related sites to exchange links with you...preferably not those who are competitors.
Another way to do this, if you are willing to do some research and devote a little time, is to find as many networking and business directories who offer free links back to your site. Also do a Google search for directories that are related to your industry. Find them and get listed in as many as possible. You will see your Google ranking go up in direct proportion to the number of links you have garnered that go back to your site from other websites.
